Music and the Fictive Dream or Music and Stories: The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King   was written by Irene Mecchi, Johnath a n Roberts, and Linda Woolverton, and produced by Don Hahn for Walt Disney Studios in 1994, in the United States .   This film drew inspiration from multiple different sources including animal behavior, Hamlet, and stories from the Bible about Joseph and Moses. This animated musical centers around the main character Simba , a lion prince who is supposed to inherit the kingdom from his father Mufasa. However, after Mufasa’s tragic death o rchestrated by Simba’s uncle Scar, he must flee the kingdom. After growing up, living a carefree life , events cause Simba to return home and challenge Scar for control of the kingdom.   Being a musical, The Lion King heavily relies on music to influence the emotions of the audience, create a better storytelling atmosphere, and help with character development throughout the story. Louis Armstrong Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana in a neighborhood so unsafe it was nicknamed “The Battlefield .” He grew up in extreme poverty being raised by his mother alongside his sister . He dropped out of school in fifth grade, earning money by working for the Karnofsky family so he could save up to pay for his first cornet.   During a New Year's Eve celebration in 1912, he shot a pistol into the air to celebrate and was arrested and sent to the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys. While there, he was tutored by Peter Davis , gaining much more knowledge on playing the cornet. After he was released in 1914, Louis decided to pursue a life as a musician , eventually getting tutored again by one of the top cornetists, Joe Oliver.   Fletcher Henderson and His orchestra For a while he worked as an entertainer on riverboats, playing cornet for pe ople traveling the Mississippi River.
